Recently, two core theoretical achievements by Researcher Sun Zuodong from the Ya'ou Brain Science Institute of Heilongjiang province — Analysis of action potential differences between two types of excitable cells based on animal experiments and Why Does Consciousness Originate from the Brain Rather Than the Heart? — have been officially published on China Brain Science Network. Based on the original "Origami Windmill Model", this series of research provides a unified and subversive systematic explanation for cell electrophysiology and the origin of consciousness from the perspectives of physical dynamics and circuit essence, marking a major original breakthrough of China in the frontier field of basic brain science.
Researcher Sun Zuodong has long been engaged in basic brain science theory and bioelectric mechanism research. The two achievements published this time together form a logically self-consistent and progressively layered theoretical system.
At the level of action potential mechanism, the research, for the first time from the perspective of ion channel rotational dynamics, uniformly explains the fundamental cause of the differences in electrical signals between neurons and cardiomyocytes. The paper points out that the action potential morphologies of the two types of cells (rapid spikes of neurons and broad platforms of cardiomyocytes) are not determined by different channel types, but by the differences in channel rotation speed and pore size, providing a brand-new physical picture for electrophysiology.
On the issue of consciousness localization, the research pioneeringly proposes the "Neuronal Open Antenna Model" and "Cardiomyocyte Closed-Loop Capacitance Model". The theory rigorously demonstrates that neurons, with their dendrites forming oscillating antennas, can generate and radiate electromagnetic waves carrying information, serving as the physical carrier of consciousness; while the myocardium, as a closed capacitance syncytium with an inward electric field, only performs the mechanical function of pumping blood. This answers the age-old question of "consciousness is in the brain not the heart" from the physical essence, pushing consciousness research into a new stage of measurability and computability.
This series of achievements breaks through the theoretical framework of traditional neuroscience, forming a complete interpretation system running through micro and macro levels from ion channels and cellular electrical activities to advanced brain functions. It not only lays a theoretical foundation for understanding the essential differences between the brain and the heart, but also provides a brand-new underlying logic for future directions such as brain-computer interfaces and physical treatment of neurological diseases.
The simultaneous publication of the two papers systematically demonstrates the originality and forward-thinking of Chinese scholars in the field of basic brain science theory, contributing Chinese wisdom to the paradigm innovation of global brain science research. (By Ai Li)
